CHAPTER 28

Soon, Connor’s apartment was buzzing with more activity than it had since he’d moved in. Lucy had arrived with her mother, and Detective Stewart Pierce had brought with him a team of technicians. Of course, Dylan and Olin were also there.

Gathered in the living room, they had all agreed he needed to follow the kidnapper’s directions if they wanted any chance of getting the boy back.

“But you’re not going alone,” Stewart had said.

Lucy, who had been sitting nervously on the sofa, suddenly looked alarmed. “What? We can’t send somebody else in there with him. Who knows what might happen to my son if we do that?”

“It will be okay. The kidnapper’s not going to see them. We’re going to set up a perimeter around the building and mike Connor up so we can hear what’s happening. The kidnapper won’t have any idea. Once it’s safe, we’ll move in.”

The building they were talking about was one of a dozen warehouses in an industrial part of the city. There was little around it other than a Pepsi plant and a Mexican restaurant called Pico. Connor knew this because he had scouted the area using Google Maps after he had made all his phone calls.

While they were talking, a group of technicians gathered up the box and everything that had come with it, then took it all down to their mobile lab to examine.

“You’re sure he won’t see them?” Lucy asked.

“I’m sure,” Stewart said.

She stood up and started pacing—at least, as much as anyone could pace in that small and crowded room. Then she spun around to face the detective again. “I have a better idea. Why don’t we just find out who owns the place? That should tell us everything we need to know, shouldn’t it?”

“That’s a good question,” Dylan said.

Connor was inclined to agree. However, before he could say anything, Stewart shot down the idea. “I had somebody looking into that on the way over. The place is owned by Newsom Enterprises. They’re a big player in the commercial space. Industrial, in particular. Whoever is using that warehouse is renting it from them. It’s already after eight o’clock—too late to get a name. We’d have to wait until tomorrow for that, and I don’t think that’d be such a good idea. The kidnapper obviously believes Connor would get the package today, so we’re taking a big risk if we don’t follow through on his instructions. At the very least, I think we need to stay engaged.”

That information framed Lucy’s question in a new light. While Connor figured it would be difficult to buy a building with a fake name, it wouldn’t be nearly as hard to rent one. That meant, even if they got a name, they couldn’t assume it would lead them anywhere.

After he said as much, Dylan asked, “What about the box? Maybe once the technicians are done with it, we should open it up. Maybe there’s evidence in there we could use.”

Stewart shook his head. “Bad idea. Somebody is probably expecting Connor to hand him that package when he gets to the warehouse.
